POSITION:             

Librarian, School Facilities – Health and Safety Unit

(ONE YEAR POSITION)

LOCATION:

44-36 Vernon Boulevard, Queens, NY 11101

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Appointed and tenured New York City Public Schools Librarian
  • Must have New York State Certification in Media Specialist
  • Three years’ experience

 Bachelor’s degree in library science, Environmental Science, or a related field.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Librarian is responsible for managing and organizing AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) management plans, ensuring that all records are up-to-date, well-maintained, and easily accessible. This incumbent will catalog AHERA books, update documentation, and collaborate with environmental consultants to maintain regulatory compliance and promote safety within our facilities. Performs related work.

 

  MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain an organized library system by cataloging AHERA-related books, records, and reports by year to ensure easy navigation.
  2. Collaborate with the H&S Unit to plan and implement management processes and provide guidance for AHERA-related materials.
  3. Ensure accurate entry and storage of the latest limited asbestos survey findings, periodic surveillance reports, and related documents in the database.
  4. Track all abatement activities, reoccupancy letters, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for non-asbestos containing materials (non-ACM).
  5. Collaborate with environmental consultants by scheduling research and review sessions to maintain a comprehensive understanding of AHERA regulations and compliance practices.
  6. Oversee the management of visitor logs and perform additional duties to support the AHERA library’s overall management and organization.
  7. Assist users in locating and accessing both physical and digital resources related to AHERA compliance and management.
  8. Assist users with technical aspects of accessing digital resources, ensuring they are trained in database navigation and retrieval of AHERA-related information.
  9. Monitor library services, collect user feedback, and implement improvements to enhance resource accessibility and user experience.
  10. Act as a point of contact for supporting audits, inspections, or compliance checks related to AHERA records.
  11. Provide on-site technical assistance around library-related issues.

 

LIBRARIAN SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience in a librarian, archival, or related role, with familiarity in managing regulatory or compliance documentation preferred.
  • Proficiency in database management, record-keeping, and cataloging systems.
  • Understanding of AHERA regulations and asbestos management practices; knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication abilities for engaging effectively with consultants, stakeholders, and team members.

WORK YEAR:

As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement

HOURS:

8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday
