Your child’s IEP may recommend Extended School Year (ESY) services (also known as “12-month services”). ESY services are special education instructional programs and/or related services provided during July and August. ESY services are different from general education summer school.
If your child was determined to require ESY services at his/her IEP meeting, the IEP team recommended either they receive the same program and services in July–August as in September–June, or less intense services, according to their individual needs. The 12-month Service and/or Program page of your child’s IEP shows whether your child is recommended for ESY and, if so, which services will be provided.
Students with 12-month Special Class recommendations participate in our Extended School Year (ESY) program. This program offers a full day of learning designed to help students reach their IEP goals. In addition, the program also incorporates enrichment activities to offer students a fun and rewarding summer experience. If your child also has SETSS or Related Service recommendations in addition to Special Class, they will also get those services as part of their program. The ESY program is different than general education summer programs that are not designed to provide special class or provide IEP prescribed supports for students. If your child’s IEP recommends 12-month related services and/or Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETSS) they may attend Summer Rising (on the same basis as students not recommended for ESY), in addition to receiving his/her recommended related services and/or SETSS.
You will be notified of the site for your child’s ESY program in early May. In Summer 2024, the ESY program will run Monday through Friday, beginning on July 2 and ending on August 12. When you receive your placement letter, you will be asked to complete a survey letting us know if your child will participate. This year, ESY programs for students in grades K-8 are included in the Summer Rising program (offered to all NYC students) at their sites. ESY students will participate in Summer Rising enrichment activities as well as have the opportunity to participate in the extended-day portion of the day (from 3PM to 6PM). If your child’s IEP was recently changed to include a 12-month recommendation to begin in the Summer of 2024 and you do not receive an ESY placement letter; or if you have any questions about your child’s special education program for July–August 2024 that are not covered on this page, please contact SpecialEducation@schools.nyc.gov. If your child is receiving specialized transportation (special education bus service), you may call the Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) hotline at 718-392-8855 or go to the OPT website to access your child’s July–August route information, beginning June 24. Notification letters with route information have been sent out. If you did not receive a letter or cannot find your child’s route information on the website, please call 718-392-8855. Preschool Students
Preschool students who attend center-based programs and are recommended for ESY, typically attend the same site for July–August as for September–June.
Preschool students who are recommended for SEIT and/or related services for ESY, may receive services at a different location for July–August. Please contact your Committee on Preschool Special Education if you have any questions about the location of SEIT or related services for ESY.

Students Entering Kindergarten (KIP)
Kindergarten begins in September for all students, including students recommended for ESY. If your child was born in 2019 and has a preschool IEP that recommends ESY services, s/he will receive ESY services according to the preschool IEP in July–August 2024.

School-Age Students (K–12)
District 75
If your child attends a District 75 school, s/he will attend the same school for July–August (even if s/he will enter middle school or high school in September). Most District 75 schools have multiple sites. Your child’s school will notify you of the schedule and any change to the site for July–August. If you didn’t receive this information by June 3, or if you have any questions about District 75 programs for July-August 2024, please contact SpecialEducation@schools.nyc.gov or call 212-802-1500.
If your child will be entering middle school or high school in September, you will be notified of the school s/he will attend by mid-August. If you haven’t received this notification by August 15, please contact SpecialEducation@schools.nyc.gov.
New York State-Approved Non-Public Schools
If your child attends a New York State–Approved Non-Public School (NPS) and has an IEP that recommends ESY services in an NPS, s/he will typically attend the same NPS for ESY as for September– June. Your child’s NPS will provide you with ESY schedule information.
If your child attends an NPS but has an IEP that recommends a public school special class for ESY, by mid-June you should have received a public school placement offer for the 2023-2024 school year (including July – August 2024) or a P-1 (“Nickerson letter”) enabling you to register your child at the NPS for the 2023-2024 school year at DOE expense. If you did not receive a public school placement offer or P-1 by June 17, please contact SpecialEducation@schools.nyc.gov.
District 1–32 Special Class Programs (15:1, 12:1, 12:1:1)
If your child’s IEP recommends a special class in a DOE District 1–32 school for ESY, ESY services will be provided at an ESY special class site. You should have been notified of your child’s ESY special class site and schedule. If you do not receive this notification by June 3, please contact SpecialEducation@schools.nyc.gov.
If your child will begin middle school or high school in September, you will be notified of the school s/he will attend by mid-August. If you haven’t received this notification by August 15, please contact MSEnrollment@schools.nyc.gov for middle school, or HSEnrollment@schools.nyc.gov for high school.
Related Services / Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETSS)
If your child’s IEP recommends Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and/or Speech Therapy for ESY, but does not recommend a special class program for ESY, you should have received a letter with information about ESY related services, including a link and phone number to a survey for site selection, in late May. If you do not receive this letter by June 3, or if you have any questions regarding ESY related services, please contact SummerRS@schools.nyc.gov.
If your child’s IEP recommends a service other than Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and/or Speech Therapy for ESY, but does not recommend a special class program for ESY, you will receive a letter from the DOE with information on how to obtain these services. If you did not receive this information by June 3, please contact SpecialEducation@schools.nyc.gov.
If your child’s IEP recommends SETSS for ESY, you should have been contacted by your child’s school with information regarding services for July–August. If you did not receive this information by June 3, please contact SpecialEducation@schools.nyc.gov.
