LOCATION:   

Itinerant, serving multiple schools; assigned to Office of Student Pathways (Pathways) located at 110 William Street, New York, New York 10038

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

New York State licensed and regularly appointed Guidance Counselor. For current DOE employees, you must also have been rated Satisfactory (S) for the past 3 years and have a satisfactory record of attendance and punctuality.

POSITION SUMMARY:

New York City Public Schools has outlined a bold vision to reimagine the educational experience for all New York City Public School (NYCPS) students, so they graduate with real-world skills and experience, a head start on postsecondary, and a strong plan to put them on a path to a rewarding career and long-term economic security.

The Office of Student Pathways, under the leadership of the Chief of Student Pathways, is tasked with driving towards the administration’s bold vision to reimagine the student experience through career-connected learning so that by 2030:

  • 100% of NYCPS students will enter high school with skills in financial literacy and computational thinking and having explored careers of interest;
  • 100% of NYCPS graduates will have foundational skills for career readiness, computer science, and financial literacy, a strong plan, and early college credits/career credentials; and
  • 100,000 NYCPS high schoolers will have in-depth experiences in career-connected pathways, including internships or apprenticeships, in high growth, high opportunity fields.

The College and Career Planning team (CCPT) within the Office of Student Pathways is responsible for developing and implementing strategy and policy to ensure all NYC Public School students have access to high-quality college and career advising and awareness to support the development of a strong college and career plan. The CCPT leads the development and delivery of a range of capacity-building resources, training, tools and direct-to-school supports to drive improvement in the number of students graduating with a strong plan and on a path to college and career.

The Pathways Advising Coach, Grades 9-12 will be a counselor assigned who has deep experience as a practitioner and counselor-leader in following areas:

  • delivery of individualized, culturally and linguistically responsive college and career advising supports from grades 9-12;
  • implementation of data informed systems and tools to drive improvement and equity in student outcomes and targeted student supports;
  • and school programming strategies aligned with the NYCPS Career Navigation Roadmap for the integration of robust sequences of advising and awareness experiences across students’ school journey from grades 9 to 12.

The Pathways Advising Coach will provide coaching and implementation support to district teams, school leaders, school teams, counselors and staff to drive progress for a caseload of high schools toward College and Career Planning priority goals for high quality pathways advising and positive student outcomes.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Offer direct coaching and implementation support to counselors, school leaders, and school teams to enhance the delivery of individualized, culturally, and linguistically responsive college and career advising per the Career Navigation Roadmap.
  • Guide schools in recognizing their strengths and areas for improvement, and assist in developing systems, routines, and structures that promote school-wide coordination of high-quality advising aligned with the NYCPS standards outlined in the Career Navigation Roadmap.
  • Design and provide tailored professional learning and training based on field feedback, trends observed during school visits, and priority goals for delivering high-quality pathways advising.
  • Support school teams in using data-informed tools and systems to track student progress to ensure equitable access to robust postsecondary plans and experiences.
  • Oversee the documentation of school-level progress and challenges and analyze school trends to guide continuous improvement and citywide strategy development.
  • Partner with schools and district teams to align and optimize the use of budgetary resources allocated for college and career planning activities.
  • Support the implementation of college and career planning experiences that are vertically integrated across high school grades, align with the Career Navigation Roadmap, and foster a strong college- and career-going culture.
  • Collaborate with the central CCPT team to curate and adapt resources and tools for use by school teams, ensuring they reflect field needs and support implementation of high-quality advising practices with fidelity.
  • Offer guidance to schools on initiating and enhancing effective partnerships that expand access to advising support, programs, and career-connected learning opportunities.
  • Engage in collaboration across offices to ensure alignment of Pathways Initiatives and integration with the broader goals of the Office of Student Pathways, including communications and field-facing messaging.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of citywide advising initiatives and professional learning sequences and provide feedback to enhance the continuous improvement of programming and support.
  • Develop and manage strategic project plans related to school support, including scheduling, delivery models, and evaluation systems to assess the progress of implementation.
  • Support the development of internal reports, presentations, and briefings for senior leadership, including recommendations related to program design, evaluation, and policy.
  • Represent the College and Career Planning Team in both internal and external meetings, including those involving school communities, partners, and key stakeholders.
  • Stay updated on research, trends, and policies related to college and career advising, and apply insights from field experience to inform the development of central strategies.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Demonstrated expertise in college and career advising, including 3 years of work as dedicated college and career advisor OR completion of advising and awareness credential OR both – preference will be given to candidates with all of the aforementioned.
  • Extensive expertise and experience as a practitioner in the following areas:
    • delivery of individualized, culturally and linguistically responsive college and career advising supports;
    • implementation of data informed systems and tools to drive improvement and equity in student outcomes and targeted student supports;
    • school programming strategies for integration of robust sequences of advising and awareness experiences across students’ school journey from grades 6-12.
  • Demonstrated success in staff development and whole-school capacity building in each of the above areas.
  • Demonstrated success in development and facilitation of professional learning in a range of content areas specific to college and career advising and awareness.
  • Demonstrated success in development of resources and tools to support implementation of high-quality college and career advising.
  • Demonstrated and extensive knowledge of all NYC Public Schools policies regarding student programming, promotion and graduation requirements, and college and career planning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to build system-wide capacity to deliver college and career planning and ensure that greater numbers of students graduate prepared for life after high school.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, including public speaking, meeting facilitation, and the ability to develop concise summaries and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to invest, motivate and engage others.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills, specifically in dealing with both education and non-education personnel, internal and external to NYC Public Schools. 
  • Demonstrated capacity to thrive in a team-oriented, high-pressure environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and anticipate issues needing resolution.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail, exceptionally well-organized, and ability to meet tight, frequent and changing deadlines.
  • Commitment to ongoing content expertise and skills development.

WORK YEAR/HOURS:

As Per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement

9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday Through Friday, unless otherwise specified in the assignment

School Year (September 4, 2025, through June 30, 2026) plus five additional days in winter, spring or summer recess pursuant to UFT contract, as mutually agreed upon between supervisor and counselor.

The hours of service of a counselor shall be thirty-seven and one-half hours per week exclusive of a daily thirty-minute lunch period. Flexibility for earlier start or later finish to the day with approval of supervisor. Requirement to work up to 30 per session days during summer vacation period, starting July 2025.
