Chancellor Fariña Launches 12th Annual NYC Public School Survey
Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña today announced the launch of the 12th annual NYC School Survey, available online and in print in 10 languages for students, parents and staff members to complete by March 23.
NEW YORK - Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña today announced the launch of the 12th annual NYC School Survey, available online and in print in 10 languages for students, parents and staff members to complete by March 23. One of the nation's largest annual surveys, the NYC School Survey gathers feedback aligned to the research-based Framework for Great Schools from all members of school communities.
"I encourage families, students and staff members to share their feedback and complete the NYC School Survey by March 23," said Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña. "Hearing from all members of New York City's educational community is critical to building strong schools and creating equity and excellence in every school."
For the first time, over half a million parents participated in the survey last year. Overall survey participation exceeded one million respondents for the second year in a row, with 1,013,131 students, teachers and parents participating.
The NYC School Survey is designed in partnership with the Research Alliance for NYC Schools, and provides actionable information on school quality that is aligned to the DOE's research-based Framework for Great Schools. The survey collects information about a school's capacity across six essential elements - Rigorous Instruction, Supportive Environment, Collaborative Teachers, Effective School Leadership, Strong Family-Community Ties, and Trust - that drive student achievement. Research has demonstrated that schools strong on the elements of the Framework are more likely to produce gains in attendance and student achievement.
"In recent years, the NYC School Survey has become a stronger tool for gathering information about the City's public schools," said James Kemple, Executive Director of the Research Alliance for NYC Schools. "Studies show that teachers', students', and parents' perspectives provide valuable insight into a school's quality and capacity to improve student learning. Higher response rates help ensure that the Survey is capturing the full range of perspectives in the school community."
Families will receive a paper survey that will be backpacked home with students and distributed at school events. If parents do not have their paper survey form, they can use the new code lookup tool on the survey login page to receive their unique access code and complete the survey. Students in grades 6 through 12 will receive and complete their surveys in school, either on paper or online.
The parent and student surveys are available both on paper and online at the School Survey website in 10 languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu.
School staff will take the survey online. For the first time, school social workers, psychologists and secretaries will be eligible to take the survey along with teachers, paraprofessional and parent coordinators.
Results from the survey are included in each school's School Quality Guide and School Quality Snapshot. All survey responses are due by March 23.
