This guide features schools in Manhattan that have programs that require an audition for admissions. Use this guide to help you schedule and prepare for auditions at schools in Manhattan. Programs with an asterisk (*) next to the name indicates the use of common audition components. Read pages 26-28 of the 2020 NYC High School Admissions Guide for more information on common audition components. For all audition programs, families should contact the school for the most up-to-date information.

Art and Design High School

ProgramInformation
Architectural Design (M60N)*Portfolio with 8-12 pieces of original artwork created from observation and students' own imagination with a diversity of subject matter and use of media. Please include examples of line drawings as well as value studies of geometric shapes and forms. You should also include a drawing of your neighborhood and a plan of your bedroom or your apartment. Three-dimensional pieces can be photographed. You will be required to draw from observation and memory.
Commercial Art and Design (M60P)*Prepare a portfolio of 8-15 pieces of original work. Include two examples of observational drawings in your portfolio. You will complete up to 3 art assignments at the audition. Check School's website for examples. They may include original character designs, drawings from observation, still life, fashion design and drawing from imagination.
Film/Video Production (M60Q)*Portfolio including two storyboards (each a minimum of ten frames each) depicting a scene from imagination and a 250-word essay describing your interest in filmmaking. At the audition, students will be given a visual representation and will be asked to develop a story that could be used as the basis for a film. Be prepared to address these questions: What is the story about? Who are the main characters? What are the conflicts? What type of film? How does it end? Materials are supplied at audition.
Digital Arts (M60R)*Prepare a portfolio of 8-15 pieces of original work. Can be hard copy or digital in format. Include two examples of observational drawings in your portfolios. You will complete up to 3 art assignments at the audition. Check School's website for examples. They may include character design, poster design, original photographs in addition to an array of art media.

Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts

ProgramInformation
Fine and Visual Art (M80J)*You must bring a portfolio of 8-15 pieces of original artwork done in a variety of media. The type of artwork should be from observation, imagination, and memory. All artwork must be labeled appropriately to include student name, type of artwork, and medium. You must also label artwork as being created from observation, imagination, or memory. Photographs - not originals - of three-dimensional (3D) works may be included. For the audition, you will be given three drawing assignments. Students are asked to draw the human figure from observation, draw a still life from memory, and create a drawing in color based on imagination. All drawing materials for auditions will be supplied by the school at the time of the audition.
Dance (M80K)*You will participate in both a ballet class and a modern dance class. You should wear ballet shoes and fitted black dance attire.
Instrumental Music (M80L)*You should prepare a solo selection to perform without accompaniment and bring one copy of the music you plan to perform. You should bring your instruments to the audition, except if you are auditioning on piano, percussion, tuba, double bass, or harp. These instruments will be provided by the school at the auditorium. Amplifiers also will be provided at the audition if you are an electric guitarist. You will be tested for rhythm and tonal memory and will be asked to perform a sight-reading excerpt. You will also be evaluated based on rhythm, tone quality, and technique.
Vocal Music (M80M)*You should prepare a song to sing without accompaniment for the audition. LaGuardia High School has a suggested online song list (www.laguardiahs.org); you are not required to select from the song list. The song must showcase the applicant's rhythm, tone, interpretation, and pitch. In addition to performing the selected song, you will be asked to sing back melodic patterns and tap back rhythmic patterns.
Drama (M80N)*You should be prepared to perform two (age- and content-appropriate) contrasting one-minute monologues. You may be asked to do an impromptu reading. Attire for the audition should allow you to perform any movement necessary for your monologues or an impromptu reading.
Technical Theater (M80P)You are expected to bring a prepared 3D design model/diorama with attached photograph of the diorama from one of the following plays: The Crucible, A Raisin in the Sun, or Dracula. You must be able to discuss the play and your choices in designing the diorama. You must also be able to carry the diorama yourself throughout the audition day. You will participate in a one-on-one, hands-on practical in more than one aspect of technical theater.

ProgramInformation
Musical Theater (M81H)*Each applicant will be required to act, sing and dance at this audition. Please prepare the following: Acting: Present a one-minute memorized monologue (comedic or dramatic) from a published play. Singing: Present 32 bars of a memorized Broadway song (age-appropriate) - an accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music in the appropriate key. Dancing: Be prepared to learn a short theater dance combination - please wear clothing that allows for freedom of movement, as well as jazz shoes or sneakers.
Drama (M81J)*Prepare two contrasting monologues (one minute each), for example: dramatic/comedic, classical/contemporary, published/original, or theater/film. Choose characters close to your age or life experience, decide who your characters are talking to and why, and completely memorize both pieces.
Classical Vocal Music (M81K)*Present a memorized classical music selection. The song must demonstrate vocal skills and ability. Classical selections can be found in either 'Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias' or 'The Art Song Anthology.' Do not present rock, pop, gospel, country, musical theater, Disney or contemporary music. You must bring sheet music for your song to the audition; an accompanist will be provided. Vocal musicianship (the ability to sing scales, sing a cappella, etc.) will be tested at the audition.
Dance (M81N)*Participate in an Ailey School master class that includes ballet, modern, and jazz techniques. Applicants must wear ballet shoes and fitted black dance attire. No prepared solo is necessary.

Theater Arts (M20X)*Students must come prepared to audition in all three areas: singing, acting, and dance. Acting: students should be prepared to perform a 1-minute monologue from memory. The monologue should be from a published script. Students are to avoid material that is self-written, 'Luisa's' monologue from The Fantasticks, or monologues solely written for monologue books. Dance: students should be prepared to demonstrate a modern dance combination prepared by the dance faculty. Please bring clothes appropriate for dance. Vocal: students should be prepared to sing 16 bars of a song, preferably from a musical. Please bring sheet music with you for an accompanist.

ProgramInformation
Musical Theater (M42J)*Come prepared to (1) sing a memorized song from a Broadway musical; AND (2) present a memorized one-minute monologue from a published play or musical. Applicants must bring the sheet music in the key in which they will sing, hole-punched and must sing with the provided accompanist. Applicants may also be asked to repeat vocal phrases in order to demonstrate rhythm, tonal memory and basic vocal technique and/or replicate a dance combination. Ability to take direction will be strongly considered.
Vocal Music: Classical and Contemporary (M42K)*Come prepared to sing from memory, in a medium tempo (A) Amazing Grace, Over the Rainbow, Silent Night, or The Star Spangled Banner; OR (B) a classical or musical theater selection. For the classical or musical theater selection applicants must bring the sheet music in the key in which they will sing. Applicants must sing with the provided accompanist. Applicants should be able to demonstrate both chest and head voice and will be asked to repeat vocal phrases in order to demonstrate rhythm, tonal memory and basic vocal technique. Ability to take direction will be strongly considered.
Dance: Ballet and Modern (M42L)*Come prepared to take class, learning ballet and modern dance combinations and performing them in small groups. Applicants will be evaluated on alignment, the ability to follow directions, musicality, strength, and stretch. Applicants are expected to wear dance clothes (leotards, footless tights and ballet shoes) and do NOT need to prepare a one minute dance.
Drama (M42N)*Come prepared to present two memorized one-minute monologues from published playwrights. Characters chosen should be age-appropriate.
Instrumental Music (M42P)*Come prepared to demonstrate competence and agility on your instrument by playing a selection of medium difficulty. Applicants must bring their instruments and two copies of the sheet music. The following instrument/equipment will be provided: baritone sax, guitar amplifier, tuba, double bass, percussion (bring your own drumsticks and mallets). Applicants will be asked to play two scales from memory and sight-read excerpts.

Theater Arts (M26A)*Perform two memorized monologues, one dramatic and one humorous, one-minute each.
Dance (M26D)*Participate in a short movement class. Prepare and perform a one to two-minute dance solo of their choice. Applicants must bring dance clothes (leotards, footless tights and ballet shoes) and a CD/thumb drive with music.
Visual Arts (M26J)*Present a portfolio of 5-8 pieces of original artwork, including at least two sketches.
Instrumental Music (M26M)*Perform a 2-3 minute instrumental piece of music. The style of music can be jazz, gospel, contemporary or classical. Applicants should bring their musical instrument to the audition and the sheet music needed for their performance.
Vocal Music (M26R)*Perform two contrasting selections from memory (a capella). Be prepared to vocalize and sight-read.
