Experienced teacher leader (Model Teacher, Peer Collaborative Teacher, Master Teacher); tenured teacher; with minimum of three years of satisfactory teaching experience

Position Summary:

The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality (TRQ) coordinates the recruitment of highly-skilled teachers to meet the staffing needs of NYC public schools, developing initiatives to promote equitable distribution of teachers across all schools and creating a career ladder for teachers throughout the system. These responsibilities are encompassed in TRQ’s mission:

  • Serve as the primary marketing agent and source of information to individuals seeking to become NYC public school teachers in order to recruit a large, highly skilled, diverse pool of candidates
  • Design and manage recruitment initiatives, programs, and pathways for individuals to become NYC teachers, especially to address subject and geographic shortage areas
  • Select a high quality pool of candidates to become NYC teachers through rigorous, research-driven, screening processes
  • Design and implement high quality field experiences for teacher candidates in both alternative certification and traditional pathways
  • Provide strategic assistance to schools to help them make optimal local hiring decisions
  • Lead teacher portfolio initiatives, including incentives, to promote an equitable distribution of skilled teachers across all schools and especially ensure that students with the greatest need are served by highly effective educators

The Teacher Career Pathways team, within TRQ, oversees the strategic approach and implementation of initiatives to support recognition, retention and teacher career development within the Division of Human Resources. Additionally, the team manages the development and implementation of several teacher leadership programs that provide career advancement opportunities to teachers. The team aims to advance the career trajectory of the NYC teaching force by developing and managing leadership opportunities that continuously improve teaching practice and adult leadership, identifying and supporting strong teachers in their ongoing learning and effectively communicating opportunities to ensure equitable access by our diverse and talented teaching force.

The Teacher Team Leader position is a teacher leadership role wherein coaches are asked to work with groups of schools, supporting the implementation of teacher career ladder positions. Within partner schools, Teacher Team Leaders facilitate the professional learning of teachers who have taken on the school-based teacher leadership roles of Master Teacher, Peer Collaborative Teacher, and Model Teacher.

Duties and Responsibilities of Teacher Team Leader:

  • Collaboratively conceptualize and create a sequence of professional development materials, tools and resources that will be used in job-embedded, school-based professional development of teacher leaders
  • Provide school-based, job-embedded professional development for Teacher Leader Roles
  • Model non-evaluative classroom visits and instructional debrief conversations aligned with Danielson’s Framework for Teaching
  • Support teacher leaders in the planning and facilitation of strategic, differentiated professional development for members of their school community
  • Serve as liaison between partner programs and districts, participating school leaders and teacher leaders
  • Cultivate relationships with partner schools, school leaders and teacher leaders
  • Participate in weekly professional learning meetings with the Career Development Team
  • Establish systems for sharing of effective instructional practices within and between schools
  • Share learning and reflections with Career Development team to inform teacher career ladder development
  • Coordinate support for the establishment and ongoing work of professional learning communities with partner schools
  • Support Teacher Career Pathways team in the Teacher Leader qualification cycle including interviews, reviewing applications and requalification submissions

Selection Criteria:

  • Extensive instructional expertise.Applicants must have been rated Highly Effective, Effective or Satisfactory in the prior school year in order to be considered for this position.
  • Experience utilizing Danielson’s Framework for Teaching as a tool to support the development of teaching practices
  • Experience in formal or informal teacher leadership positions
  • Demonstrated capacity to effectively communicate and collaborate with other teachers and school leaders
  • Experience designing professional development experiences for peers
  • Experience with or interest in facilitation of workshops
  • Experience with providing peer feedback
  • Willingness to travel to schools and meetings throughout the city
  • Experience as a Master Teacher, Peer Collaborative Teacher, or Model Teacher
  • Capacity for public speaking
  • Strong organizational, oral, written communication and technology skills
  • Willingness to work occasional Saturdays, school breaks, evening hours, and over the summer to support the development and implementation of professional development workshops (per session will be provided for specified activities)
  • Excellent record of attendance, punctuality and professionalism

Work Year:

As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement – Teacher Team Leaders will work five additional days beyond the Teacher Assigned schedule


8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday


As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement – Teacher Team Leaders will receive $14,000 additional compensation per year
